pFood Enforcement Overview1https://open.fda.gov/apis/food/enforcement/The openFDA food enforcement reports API returns data from the FDA Recall Enterprise System (RES), a database that contains information on recall event information submitted to FDA. Currently, this data covers publicly releasable records from 2004-present. The data is updated weekly.
pFood Enforcement Overview2https://open.fda.gov/apis/food/enforcement/The procedures followed to input recall information into RES when FDA learns of a recall event are outlined in Chapter 7 of FDA’s Regulatory Procedure Manual The Regulatory Procedures Manual is a reference manual for FDA personnel. It provides FDA personnel with information on internal procedures to be used in processing domestic and import regulatory and enforcement matters.

pAdditional Information About Food Recall Enforcement Reports7https://open.fda.gov/apis/food/enforcement/When an FDA-regulated product is either defective or potentially harmful, recalling that product—removing it from the market or correcting the problem—is the most effective means for protecting the public.
pAdditional Information About Food Recall Enforcement Reports8https://open.fda.gov/apis/food/enforcement/Recalls are almost always voluntary, meaning a company discovers a problem and recalls a product on its own. Other times a company recalls a product after FDA raises concerns. Only in rare cases will FDA request or order a recall. But in every case, FDA's role is to oversee a company's strategy, classify the recalled products according to the level of hazard involved, and assess the adequacy of the recall. Recall information is posted in the Enforcement Reports once the products are classified.

Use a focused offline reference to the food-enforcement API. The dataset organises the selected documentation sections so they can be reviewed or indexed while keeping their origin and archived edition identifiable.

What this download contains

The unit is a documentation section, not a food recall. The product does not include a hosted API, notifications or the underlying enforcement export. Structured text also cannot guarantee the exact visual layout of every source page.

Working with this edition

Check the section inventory, then use the reference alongside the current official documentation when planning requests or interpreting API responses. Choose the separate food-enforcement dataset when the work requires actual recall rows.

Product questions

Is this the food recall dataset?

No. It is the technical documentation product. The enforcement-record dataset is separate.

Does it include automatic recall notifications?

No. It is an editioned reference download, not a monitoring or messaging service.
